A Victorian Legacy...



From the Princes Bridge, I headed down St. Kilda Road to reach the Queen Victoria Gardens, Melbourne's tribute to the monarch, under whose reign Melbourne was developed...

Entering the gardens...


The Queen Victoria Gardens is located on 4.8 hectare plot of land and commemorates Queen Victoria's reign started in 1837, two years after the initial European settlement of Melbourne was founded...


St. Kilda Road isn't too busy afterall...


The Pathfinder, a bronze sculpture by John Robinson was installed here in 1974 and depictss a bronze Olympic hammer thrower in action...


Amazing trees in the gardens...


The garden features a huge floral clock, that contains over 7000 flowering plants. The clock was donated to the City of Melbourne by a group of Swiss watchmakers in 1966...



A bronze equestrian statue, of Queen Victoria's successor, King Edward VII stands right behind the flower clock. The statue was designed and sculpted by a Melburnian artist, Bertram Mackennal, and was installed here in 1920...



Families having a good time in the gardens...



I loved the way the bright rays of the sun filter through the leafless tree branches...


“The Phoenix”, a sculpture by the German artist, Baroness Yrsa Von Leistner...



The rotunda was built here in 1913 and named after Janet Lady Clarke, a philanthropist who worked for the welfare of women in Melbourne...

The Queen lords over Melbourne...


When Queen Victoria died in 1901, the city decided to have a monument to honour her. A memorial statue was commissioned from sculptor James White showing the Queen in ceremonial gowns casting her regal gaze across ornamental lakes, sweeping lawns and rose gardens to the Melbourne Arts Centre Spire and the city skyscrapers...

The Genie, a sculpture by Tom Bass was installed here in 1973...
